Newham Council is planning to introduce a 20mph speed limit on most streets across the borough. Many streets are already 20mph and we want to reduce the speed limit on others so that our streets are safer for everyone to use.
The Council is committed to reducing road danger and the number of people killed or seriously injured on our streets. We also want people to feel more comfortable walking and cycling on Newham’s streets.
Lower speed limits can help:
- Reduce the number of traffic collisions
- Reduce the likelihood of serious injuries in collisions, especially for pedestrians
- Reduce noise and pollution from motor traffic
- Encourage people to walk and cycle more, if they can
This will contribute towards creating a cleaner and healthier borough.
Transport for London (TfL) and neighbouring boroughs, including Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest, have either implemented, or are working towards a 20mph speed limit on most of their streets. The introduction of Newham’s 20mph programme will help create consistency in the road network.
Roads excluded and included in 20mph programme
Some major roads are not included in the 20mph programme and will retain their existing speed limits. These are:
- Newham Way (A13)
- Royal Docks Road (A1020)
- Woolwich Manor Way - between Gallions Roundabout and Woodman Street
- Sir Steve Redgrave Bridge and Albert Road (A117)
- Lower Lea Crossing (A1020)
Private streets (e.g. in developments or estates) and streets that are not managed by the Council are also excluded from the Newham 20mph programme.
All other streets are proposed to become 20mph streets.
