Will thorne pavillion

William James Thorne CBE (1857-1946) was a British trade unionist, activist and one of the first Labour Members of Parliament. He first worked at Beckton Gas Works. He served for many years on West Ham Borough Council, representing Plaistow, and was Mayor from 1917–18. The Will Thorne Pavilion is named after him.

Newham Council are leading on the restoring of a part of the Will Thorne Pavilion in Beckton Park to bring it back into use for the local community. Through the Beckton Parks Masterplan and Will Thorne Pavilion project engagement, residents and community stakeholders have provided feedback on how they want the building to be used. The following ideas are being brought forward as part of the refurbishment project:

  • Refurbish and reopen the community hall space in the pavilion and
  • Provide the opportunity for residents to hire out this space, provide space for events and community groups inside and outside of the pavilion
  • New food and beverage offer to serve users of the park and playground
  • Make toilets publicly accessible

There will be opportunities in 2025 to provide input on the programme of events that are run from this building which the operator will lead on.
