The Tate Institute

Tate institute 1 1

The Tate Institute, 1 Wythes Road, London E16 2DN, is in the Royal Docks and Silvertown area in the south of Newham. The building, constructed in 1887 as a community facility for use by the sugar factory workers and their families, is of high importance as a recognisable community facility that has been experienced and enjoyed by local people for many decades. The heritage significance of the Tate Institute is recognised within its designation as a locally listed building.

It served as a library and air raid post during World War 2 and was later renamed as Tate & Lyle Sports & Social Club in 1953. It closed in 1961 but its use for social events is understood to have continued into the 1990s.

The appointed operator, ReSpace Projects are leading on the design and build of Tate Institute, which offers a unique and striking space, close to the Tate & Lyle Factor, City Airport and homes and businesses. Due to its size, the building is being delivered in phases with the ambition when it’s 100% refurbished, being able to provide a range of community, creative, artistic and music space as well as drop in work spaces and a business enterprise hub.
