Parking permit charges - proposed changes

Simplification of resident visitor permits

What we are proposing

We are proposing replacing our current mix of resident visitor permits – which are available in 6-hour, 12-hour and 24-hour durations – with a simpler offer of just two visitor permits – 2 hour permits for shorter stays, and 1 calendar day for longer stays.

Under these plans, drivers of electric vehicles will see a reduction in the cost of parking, while drivers of the most polluting vehicles will see prices rise.

Why we are proposing it

Newham residents have told us for some time that our current mix of visitor permits are confusing, and in many cases too long for their parking needs. We are proposing to simplify the mix of visitor permits, by offering just two visitor permits – 2 hour permits for shorter stays, and 1 calendar-day for longer stays.

In addition to simplifying the product range, we are strongly committed to tackling poor air quality and reducing CO2 emissions, but until now, our prices for visitor permits have not adequately reflected this. For example, the current difference in the charges levied on electric vehicles and the most polluting vehicles is only 26p for 6-hour visitor permits, which provides limited incentive for drivers of higher polluting vehicles to make greener choices. The proposed prices will ensure that drivers of low polluting vehicles benefit from much lower charges than high-polluting diesel vehicles in future.
