Parking permit charges - proposed changes

Change to short stay parking charges

What we are proposing

We are proposing changing our charges for short stay parking to strengthen the incentives for drivers to opt for the greenest vehicle that they can, while also encouraging greater turnover of spaces in town centres, which will benefit local businesses.

Under these plans, drivers of electric vehicles will see a reduction in the cost of parking of 59p per hour, while drivers of the most polluting vehicles will see prices rise by up to £2.56 extra an hour. A diesel surcharge of £1 per hour will also be introduced. Alongside these changes, the per hour price will be standardised.

Why we are proposing it

Newham Council is strongly committed to tackling poor air quality and reducing CO2 emissions, but until now, our prices for short-stay parking have not adequately reflected this. The current difference in the charges levied on electric vehicles and the most polluting vehicles is only 45p per hour, which provides limited incentive for drivers of higher polluting vehicles to make greener choices. The proposed new prices will ensure that drivers of low polluting vehicles benefit from much lower charges than high-polluting diesel vehicles in future, while making sure that those who choose to drive high polluting or diesel vehicles, which have a significant impact on the health of our residents, are properly incentivised to make the move to greener options.

Alongside these changes, the price per hour for parking will be standardised, to encourage the turnover of spaces and discourage long stays in short-stay parking bays, which is particularly important in town centres.
