Baalam Leisure Centre Consultation
Update 10 February 2020
A decision on the future of Balaam Leisure Centre has been delayed to allow the council more time to work through the options available following a series of residents' meetings and a public consultation.
The council were due to announce its decision about the future of Balaam Leisure Centre at the next meeting of Cabinet on February 18 but will now conduct further investigation into the best options available.
Balaam Leisure Centre has been closed since December 2018 following the discovery of a serious water leak through the concrete pool tank which also forms the ceiling of the basement gym. This made the structure unsafe and the council was forced to close the centre.
Balaam Leisure Centre is the oldest of the council’s four leisure centres. It opened in 1983 and the building is now quite run down and approaching the end of its design life, as a result the site had been allocated in the council’s existing Local Plan for future housing development from 2028/29.
Cllr James Asser said: “We had a very good response and very helpful feed-back from residents to the public meetings and consultation process, so to do justice to that level of engagement, we want to take some more time to review our options based on feedback, the local plan review and wider strategic leisure needs.”
Further updates about Balaam Leisure Centre will be communicated through the Newham Magazine and the council's website.
