Art on the wall project
Young people put their art into project
Art on the Wall project made a big difference to the young people who took part, giving them an outlet for their artistic talent.
One young participant, 19-year-old Edrissa Camara, said: “Having my artwork up in Westfield [on a display in shopping centre in Stratford] for everyone to see felt unreal for me. This was one of the best opportunities for me to express my creative side which I haven’t tapped into for a while.
“The fact that everyone could see how I have honoured one of my idols in a painting is amazing. I hope that people were able to enjoy its vibrant colours and the aura that the painting gives out depicting and summarising the whole of my 2020.”
Venetta Edwards, a Detached Youth Worker who worked on the project, said: “Our first ever exhibition was in response to the impact of lockdown on young people and exhibition and allowed young people to respond in a creative way to social topics that affect young people through art.
“It also provided young people who see art as a career path with the experience of exhibiting and having their work seen by a huge footfall. The project was also a therapeutic way of communicating with a large audience.”
This project was also covered in the Newham Recorder’s weekly Year of Young Person column.
