Evidence base

There is a substantial and still growing body of evidence and research behind our approach to school meals and school food culture in Newham.  Food is fundamental to health and healthy eating in childhood is vital for development and good health and wellbeing throughout life.

Habits and tastes formed in childhood can persist throughout life, so as a council we want to maximise this opportunity to influence children and young people’s diet, as well as fostering positive relationships with food. Children must be well nourished to learn and maximise educational opportunities, which means ultimately what children eat can impact their life chances.

As a council we also use our voice, knowledge and experience in this field to campaign for change increasing access, opportunities and outcomes for as many children and young people to thrive and be healthy across the nation.
