How we collect your rubbish from houses and flats
Across the borough of Newham we collect residents’ rubbish once a week; twice daily on some of the busiest main roads.
Your household rubbish does not go to landfill. Some recyclable materials are taken out, and then the rest is used to make a fuel.
We aim to collect your rubbish within two working days.
Collections from houses
If you live in a house on street level with your own front garden, you will probably have your own wheelie bin for rubbish and for recycling.
If you live in a street property without room for a wheelie bin, you may need to put your rubbish out in black sacks. Make sure these are tied up properly, and wrap any sharp items in newspaper so that they do not rip the sack open.
You must put your bin or sack out for collection at the edge of your property by 6am on the day of your collection.
Collections from flats
If you live in a flat on street level with your own front garden, you will probably have your own wheelie bin for rubbish and recycling.
If you live above a shop then you may have shared bins, but you will probably need to put your rubbish out on the pavement for collection in black sacks. Make sure these are tied up properly, and wrap any sharp items in newspaper so that they do not rip the sack open.
You must put your bin or sack out for collection at the edge of your property by 6am on the day of your collection. If you live on one of the busiest main roads where we run timed collections, please visit our timed waste collections on busy streets page for more information.
In blocks of flats or estates, you may use larger, shared bins to hold your rubbish and recycling. Make sure you put all of your waste bags into these bins to help keep the shared areas clean and tidy and free from pests.
