Stock Street Cultural and Community Workspace

Stock Street

31 Stock Street is a locally listed building with a long connection to education and public use in the area. For many years it served as a furniture store for Curwen Primary School, and more recently it was used by the Council to store archive and museum items.

The London Borough of Newham is working in partnership with Create London as development partner to deliver the transformation of the building into a cultural and community workspace. Create London is a not-for-profit cultural organisation that works with artists, communities, and public-sector partners to develop affordable creative workspaces and long-term cultural infrastructure across London. As development partner, Create London is leading on engagement, design development, and delivery of the project on behalf of the Council.

Once complete, the building will provide affordable studios, workspaces, and shared facilities for artists, creatives, and community-focused organisations. The project aims to support collaboration and help create inclusive opportunities for creative and cultural activity in the borough.

The refurbishment places a strong emphasis on re-use, retrofit, and improved environmental performance. Alongside restoring and adapting the historic building, the works will significantly enhance the building’s sustainability, contributing to Newham’s wider ambition to reduce carbon emissions and support a low-carbon future.

Following the procurement of a contractor, works commenced on site in October 2025. Phase 1 enabling works are planned to complete in summer 2026, with further phases to follow thereafter. The building is expected to open to the public in 2027 as a new cultural and community asset for the area, with Create London remaining as head tenant.
