Green Street

Shape Newham launched in 2019 to co-design and install imaginative and original public space improvement projects across the borough. Local residents and businesses were invited to a series of community events and workshops to choose the location and priorities for each project.

One location selected for investment as part of the Shape Newham programme was the junction of Green Street and the Barking Road. These playful and eye-catching new lamp posts will work together to create a welcoming new gateway to Green Street.

The patterns on the posts are based on various fabrics for sale along Green Street indicating the produce available to those journeying up the road. The lanterns on top of the posts reflect two key pieces of local history – Boleyn Castle and Boleyn Ground football stadium.

The lampposts were designed by AOC Architecture Ltd. Installation is due to be completed in early 2024.
