Canning Town Old Library Timeline
This project will transform Canning Town Old Library into Newham’s first heritage and digital learning centre. The timeline below may change and will be updated as new milestones are established or achieved.
October 2021 – Newham Council successfully bids for £6.2 million in Levelling Up Funding to bring Canning Town Old Library back into cultural use for the community.
October 2022 – Haworth Tompkins are appointed as the project design team.
April 2024 – Newham Council successfully completes its Stage 1 development phase application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the Canning Town Old Library.
September 2024 – Refurbishment works begin on site at Canning Town Old Library, restoring this Grade II listed building and improving accessibility. The work is expected to be completed by December 2025.
From October 2024 – Newham Council’s Heritage Team will lead an ambitious public programme of heritage activities across the borough to shape the future of the heritage centre. This includes archive engagement, creative collaborations, school projects, and heritage activities for all ages.
November 2025 - Canning Town Old Library refurbishment works complete and transition of the Heritage Team into the building begins.
Autumn 2026 – Canning Town Old Library opens to the public.
