New Commission wants to hear from residents and partners on inclusion and belonging

The Mayor of Newham, Rohksana Fiaz OBE, has established a new independent Commission on the Future of Inclusion and Belonging in Multi-ethnic Newham to hear from residents, stakeholders, and organisations on how to make the borough more inclusive, where everyone feels they belong.

British Future is running the Commission for the Council. They are looking for 8-10 people from different backgrounds to join as Commissioners, including residents.

This is an exciting opportunity for 4-5 residents to bring their experience and help connect the Commission to the local community.  As a Resident Commissioner, you will:

•             Bring your experience of living in the borough or working with communities.

•             Be the link between the Council, residents, and communities.

•             Explore important issues for residents and communities.

•             Help the Commission engage with people from different backgrounds.

•             Share your ideas on how the Council and borough can be more inclusive.

•             Engage with research findings and suggest actionable recommendations.

Interested in becoming a Commissioner? Go to Newham Co-Create or click here to find out more and apply. Please note the deadline for applications is 23rd February.

What the Commission Will Focus On

The Commission aims to hear from residents, stakeholders, and organisations on how to make Council services and the borough more inclusive. It will explore how ethnicity and faith affect residents’ sense of inclusion and belonging, and how these intersect with other protected characteristics. The Commission will also challenge all forms of hate, including homophobia, transphobia, antisemitism, anti-Black racism, Islamophobia, misogyny, and discrimination against disabled people.

Why the Commission is Important

The Mayor and Newham’s leaders aim to create a fair society where everyone thrives. Tackling inequality and discrimination is central to this vision. Our anti-racist efforts have been recognised through our Tackling Racism, Inequality, and Discrimination programme. Following recent advice, we are focusing more on equality, diversity, and inclusion to ensure that we build a fairer Newham for all residents.
