Newham Trading Standards are keeping residents safe from dangerous second hand electric goods
In response to the cost of living crisis, Newham Trading Standards service has conducted a number of visits with UK Safety Management Ltd, Portable Appliance Testers (P.A.T) to assess the safety of second-hand goods on sale in the borough. The visits were designed to create a fairer trading environment by reducing the sale and supply of unsafe/non-compliant products.
Unfortunately, the cost of living crisis is impacting consumers and businesses, and the Trading Standards service needs to ensure that all products are safe for residents.
The purpose of the campaign was to advise and support businesses, whilst ensuring the safety of consumers who may turn to second-hand electrical goods, in an effort to save money.
In the leading up to the day’s activities, Trading Standards provided comprehensive advice to 15 businesses in the borough regarding the sale and supply of second-hand electrical goods.
During the safety visits Trading Standards and Portable Appliance Testers (P.A.T) inspected four business premises, and tested a total of 15 Appliances. Overall, the planned visits were a success, with only 1 product tested found to be non-compliant.
All non-compliant products are immediately removed from sale, and dependent upon the severity of the issues identified, are deemed unsuitable for re-testing or re-sale.
Newham Trading Standards service is working to support business growth and investment within the borough, which will help build a thriving local economy.
In a joint statement, Councillor Carleene Lee-Phakoe, Cabinet Member for Crime & Community Safety, and Councillor Neil Wilson, Cabinet member for Health and Adult Social Care said: “During this cost of living crisis, we want all our residents to stay safe. On this occasion, it is pleasing to see that 93% of second-hand products tested were safe and legally compliant.
“Our Trading Standards team are working hard to ensure that they identify any issues of non-compliance within the borough, and where necessary apply the appropriate advice, intervention, or action.
