Potential strike action in the waste and recycling service:
Council puts in measures to help residents if the strike goes ahead.

  • Four temporary waste drop-off sites will be set up for the disposal of rubbish.
  • Jenkins Lane Re-use and Recycling Centre is ready to accept more recycling.
  • The borough’s busiest on-street recycling banks will be emptied more often.
  • Orange recycling bags for extra recycling will be available from all Newham libraries.

The Unite union has informed the Council that they intend to strike in the waste and recycling service from Saturday 27 August 2022 to Saturday 3 September 2022 in relation to pay and conditions.

Prior to, during and for several weeks after, we expect waste, recycling and street cleansing services to be disrupted.

During any strike action the Council will prioritise waste collection and cleansing services on Newham’s main roads and estates, particularly blocks of flats (due to the fire risk). Waste and recycling from houses is unlikely to be collected during the strike period.

The Council has put in place multiple measures to help residents if the strike goes ahead.

Temporary waste drop-off sites

The temporary waste drop-off sites will be set up in four locations across the borough from Saturday 27 August remaining in operation until Sunday 11 September.

Residents will be able dispose of reasonable amounts of household waste at the sites.

The sites will be open daily from 7am to 8pm at:

  • Little Ilford Park Service Area, Reynolds Avenue, E12 6JU
  • Shaftesbury Road Car Park, 85 Shaftesbury Road, E7 8PD
  • Church St Car Park in front of shops, 30-46 Church Street, E15 3HU
  • Freemasons Road / Coolfin Road Car Park in front of shops,  78 Coolfin Road, E16 3BE

On www.newham.gov.uk/wasteadvice residents can use an interactive map to find their nearest temporary waste drop-off site.

All household rubbish should be placed in bags which are securely tied so that there is no spillage.

These sites will only take waste which can be put in a household bin. They will not take any of the following:

  • bulky items
  • garden waste
  • materials which may be harmful to health, such as chemicals and paints
  • clinical (medical) waste such as syringes and dressings. The Council will continue to provide a clinical waste collection service during the strike

These sites are in addition to the waste and recycling facilities at Jenkins Lane Re-Use and Recycling centre, which is open daily 7.30am to 5.45pm at Jenkins Lane, Barking, IG11 0AD

Recycling banks

A range of items can be recycled in Newham at the 55 on-street recycling banks.

Glass, plastic bottles, cans and paper can be recycled and some banks also have textile recycling facilities. Unfortunately card cannot be recycled at the recycling banks.

The London Recycles Website lists recycling banks provided by Newham and also by third parties like shops and supermarkets.

The most used recycling banks will be emptied more often during strike action.

Extra orange recycling bags will be available to pick up from libraries

All Newham libraries have a stock of orange recycling bags which residents can collect to store any extra recycling.

The bags will be available from Saturday 27 August.
