Children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) up to 25 years old and their siblings can enjoy sports and leisure activities with a Gr8 Day 2 Play.

Newham’s Youth Participation team is partnering with its leisure service provider — Active Newham, to deliver a rich programme of activities for young people with SEND with the Gr8 Day 2 Play on Saturday 16 July, from 12 to 6pm at Newham Leisure Centre.

Young people and their families can enjoy a range of sports taster sessions such as Bollywood and Bhangra dance, tennis, Pilates, multi-sports, indoor rowing and swimming.

Previous Gr8 Day 2 Play sessions in winter were reported to have been a great success. Some young people chose dancing to be their most favourite activity, while others said they enjoyed being able to try so many new sports and activities in one day.

Anna Sandiford, from the Council’s Youth Participation team, said: “Families really enjoyed the sessions and being able to go out for the day with each other. It was great to see siblings taking part together and young people getting involved in group activities.”

Although there will be a limited number of spaces available on the day, we strongly advise you to register your places in advance. The registration for the next Gr8 Day 2 Play session in July is now open, so make sure you book your place.

On the day, there will be information stalls about other services such as Newham Parents Forum, council-run SEND services, Resources for Autism, health and nutrition, and the Youth Empowerment Service. The vaccine bus will also be there again.

This will also be an opportunity to have your say about important issues affecting SEND young people in the borough.

British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters will be available.
