Newham’s Public Health Team has won a top prize at the prestigious Municipal Journal (MJ) Awards, for its “Well Newham: 50 Steps to a Healthier Borough” strategy.
The team, led by Corporate Director for Adults Health, Jason Strelitz, beat off stiff competition from across the UK to land the prize for best “Place Based Approaches to Health Equity.”
Jason Strelitz, members of his team and Newham’s Interim Chief Executive Colin Ansell attended the ceremony in Westminster on June 24 and collected their award from BBC News presenter, Clive Myrie.
Newham Council Interim Chief Executive Colin Ansell said: “It is wonderful to see our dedicated staff from across the Council, NHS and our wider partnership being recognised for their hard work – I’d like to congratulate everyone involved in producing a resident led Health and Wellbeing strategy for our borough which is really making a difference.”
“Their achievement is even more impressive in the context of the enormous levels of work which Public Health delivered during the two years of pandemic.”
Jason Strelitz said: “This national recognition for Newham’s Public Health team is very well deserved and welcomed.
“Since we launched “50 Steps” in 2020, the pandemic has underlined the urgent need to address the health inequalities which this strategy seeks to tackle. We will continue to work with our partners to improve the health and wellbeing of all our residents.”
