Continuing effects of high winds

Updated: 20 Feb 2022

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning from midday Sunday 20 February  tomorrow until 3pm on Monday 21 February, indicating that further periods of strong winds are expected across much of England and Wales (including London) so continued care and caution is advised.

The council is continuing to deal with the effects of storm damage to parts of the borough

9-15 Prince Regent Lane in Plaistow

We are aware that as a result of storm damage, contractors are  currently doing essential works to remove a dangerous structure at  9-15 Prince Regent Lane in Plaistow. This work is ongoing and we regret any inconvenience caused through the weekend as a result of having to remove individual concrete  blocks but this work is essential for reasons of public safety. We are hopeful of concluding the work as soon as possible.

Due to the ongoing essential works as a result of the recent storm damage Prince Regent Lane is  currently closed up to Barking Road

Buses are  not stopping in Prince Regent Lane at stops between Barking road and Glen road and some buses are being diverted.

Resumption of some effected  Council services is expected over the next days.

Refuse and recycling services that were affected on Friday February 18 2022 will return in the next days and the intention is to reopen parks from Saturday February 19 2022 with other services resuming normally following the weekend.

Our hope is that wider council services will return fully to normal in the next days but we are ready to deal with any continuing issues arising from the storm and we will provide any further updates via social media.

Residents can report any issues from Monday February 21 that still need resolving over the next days . Report – Newham Council

The Met office National guidance said that the storm may have caused the following:

  • There is a chance that flying debris could result in a danger to life.
  • Damage to buildings and homes is likely, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down. Some issues may only be emerging now after the storm on Friday
  • Roads, bridges and railway lines are likely to close , with delays and cancellations to bus train ferry and services and flights.
  • There is a possibility that power cuts, possibly prolonged, could occur and possibly affect other services such as mobile phone coverage.
  • Large waves are likely and beach material is likely to be thrown onto sea fronts and coastal roads and properties.
  • It is likely there will be falling branches and some uprooted trees.

Disruption to Council services

  • A number of council services were disrupted on Friday 18 February due to the storm and some issues may continue into next week as services resume
  • There were no refuse or recycling services on Friday 18 February.
  • Normal street cleansing services have been suspended and staff will focus on clearing debris / trees and branches.
  • Housing services will focus mainly on emergency works.
