Newham Council’s Trading Standards responded to concerns that there could be issues around Motorcycle wear being sold at the London Motorcycle show last weekend.

11 retailers were found by Newham Trading Standards to have potentially unsafe riding kit that had not been tested and certified, and in some cases had falsified labels and even fake armour.

Motorcycle wear has to meet standards under Personal Protective Equipment Regulations.

Cllr James Beckles, Cabinet Member for Crime and Community Safety said:

“Newham’s Trading Standards Officers visited the London Motorcycle Show and found a number of traders selling motorcycle clothing with no required labelling and proof that the product met the required standards.

“We take our responsibility to protect the public from unsafe goods seriously and our Trading Standards Team advised the businesses and ensured the unsafe items were immediately removed from sale.

“The team issued warnings about future conduct and further action that could be taken.

“We’ve received positive feedback from the many businesses who were complying with the standards around how quickly we dealt with the minority of businesses who were flouting the rules.”
