Mental health workshop invitation from Newham’s Youth Empowerment Service

Newham Council’s Youth Empowerment Service is holding a virtual mental health awareness workshop on 23 February for children and young people aged from nine to 25.

Young people, and professionals working with them, are invited to sign up for the virtual workshop, which will provide a space for open discussion on what mental health is, what it means to stay resilient in difficult times, and techniques for staying positive and managing stress.

The workshop is to take place online from 5pm-6pm on Wednesday, 23 February. Interested people can register, using the form: https://forms.gle/619iJ3kTph7QoGNt8

The session is part of the preparation for a youth assembly on mental health and wellbeing in early April at Stratford Youth Zone.

At the assembly, participants will learn about mental health support services and activities across Newham, attend further workshops and see an artistic performance by young people.

It will be an opportunity for those taking part to speak up about what works, what doesn’t work and what needs to be changed in Newham with regards to supporting young people with mental health.

Participation worker Cassandra Delisser, who is organising the assembly, said: “During the pandemic, it became clear just how important mental health is to young people and how serious this issue is. So it was not surprising that young people chose mental health as the theme of our next youth assembly.

“It is vital we talk to young people about mental health and give them a safe space to voice their concerns and guidance on how to manage stress and anxiety.”

Previous Youth Assembly sessions by Newham’s Youth Empowerment Service, part of the Brighter Futures team, have focused on tackling climate change and making the borough a greener place, and employment opportunities and jobs of the future.
