Share your views on our 2022/23 budget proposals

Residents of Newham will have a chance to have their say on the 2022/23 budget proposals at a special engagement webinar event on January 20 at 5.30pm.

The engagement webinar will include contributions from and offer chances to ask questions of  the Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, Councillor Terence Paul, Cabinet Member for Finance and Corporate Services and the Newham Council’s Assistant Director for Finance and Transformation Andrew Ward.

Residents can hear in detail the proposals for the budget for the next year that covers all the council’s services.

Newham Council will be hosting a briefing about these proposals via Zoom on Thursday January 20th 2022, 5:30-6:30pm, which will be joined by Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz, Councillor Terence Paul, Cabinet Member for Finance and Corporate Services, and Andrew Ward, Assistant Director for Finance and Transformation. This will be your opportunity to find out more about the budget proposals and ask questions.

Next Steps

The Council will consider the proposals at Cabinet on 8th February and agree the final budget at Full Council on 28th February. You can follow the progress of the budget proposals and view details on Council meetings here.

Our budget plans continue to support the priorities outlined in our Towards a Better Newham recovery and reorientation strategy – helping the borough to recover from the worst impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, and investing in long-term strategies that will enable Newham’s communities to thrive in the future.

The proposals include: 

  • Additional funding for Adult and Children’s Social Care
  • Additional £2m support for the most vulnerable in temporary accommodation and families with no recourse to public funds
  • Supporting people through Our Newham, and a range of support services as part of our Community Wealth building programme
  • Using our Capital programme to help deliver our Net Zero targets to tackle climate change
  • Taking action on flytipping
  • Investment to improve our streets and green spaces
  • Investing to improve our air quality
  • Continuing to deliver  1,000 new council homes, and improvements to existing homes 
  • Investments in schools and health care facilities
  • A commitment to keeping each of Newham’s 10 libraries open
  • Prioritising youth services , including youth empowerment and early help 
  • Commitment to  Keep Newham Moving through long-term investment in roads, footpaths and street lighting 
  • Continuing the Council Tax Support Scheme, which helps low income households
  • Maintaining weekly waste collections
  • Continuing to pay all staff at least the London Living Wage, and maintaining an ongoing commitment to national terms and conditions 
  • Maintaining our partnership with the Metropolitan Police 
  • Considering raising council tax by up to 2.99% 
  • Exploring savings by working more efficiently
