Queen’s Market and Hamara Ghar: investing in modernising existing buildings and exploring the possibilities together

A better Queen’s Market for traders, shoppers and residents is a priority for Newham Council and to achieve this the council will develop detailed investment options for modernising and keeping Hamara Ghar and Queen’s Market.

The Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz, said: “Queen’s Market is a cherished community asset and we want to invest in modernising its buildings because shoppers, traders and residents deserve the very best.

“We remain committed to continuing with the investment which we have been making to improve the market and the surrounding area in order to provide more choices and a better experience for residents, traders and shoppers.

“We have been listening to local residents, shoppers and traders and we will continue to work with the local community so together we consider the communities investment options. I share the excitement of the local community, who are telling me they want to get the benefit from this investment as quickly as possible.”

The council is refining its investment study options for Queen’s Market and Hamara Ghar in Upton Park’s Green Street with the aim of keeping and modernising the existing buildings. The council wants to continue the investment which it’s making in improving Queen’s Market and Hamara Ghar, so is now investigating what can be achieved by keeping these important buildings. It wants to understand what benefits could be achieved in the next five years for residents, traders and shoppers while minimising potential disruption.

As the council wants to protect the market and the sheltered housing at Hamara Ghar, any new development will happen either above the market or around the existing buildings. The council will therefore explore how the air space above the market could be used to provide much needed additional social housing close to all the amenities that residents value.

The community will continue to be fully involved in the study process through the key stakeholder working groups and engagement exercises that will take place in spring 2022.
