Covid-19 Vaccinations – one year on

Today, Wednesday 8 December, marks the anniversary of the first Londoner to receive the Covid-19 vaccination.

Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, said:

“A year after the first vaccination was delivered in London, we in Newham can look back with pride about how we as a community have stood together, pushing back against this pandemic.

“We simply could not have made it through without the workers in the NHS, those who provide care and all the services we all rely on every day; or the hundreds of community Covid Health Champions and peer supporters who stepped forward to share information about the vaccine and to help people to become vaccinated.

Today with a new variant of Covid-19 we must stand continue together as a community to make all of us safe. This means:

• Getting fully vaccinated including your booster

• Wearing masks in shops and on public transport

• Leading by example especially with those we know and love.

I got my Covid-19 booster jab last week at the Sir Ludwig Guttmann Health Centre in Stratford and I urge you to get yours too.

I wear masks on public transport and in shops not just because it is the government’s legal requirement, but because it is also the right thing to do to protect other people in Newham.

I also test myself regularly each week to make sure I don’t spread the Covid-19 to those of you I meet.

I have been really encouraged that hundreds of people have decided to get vaccinated for the first time this week but many more people in Newham need to get vaccinated to make us all safe.

You can make a difference by encouraging those you know and love to:

• Get vaccinated and get a booster

• Wear their mask on public transport and in shops.

Together we can make a difference. Together, we are Newham.
