Safeguarding adults week (15-21 November) launched with series of local events to keep the borough's vulnerable residents safe.
Many adults are at risk of abuse including, neglect, physical, domestic, sexual, psychological and emotional, financial abuse, modern slavery, organisational, discrimination and self-neglect. The most common form of abuse in Newham is neglect, with the majority of concerns happening in the person’s home by someone known to them.
Councillor Zulfiqar Ali, lead member for Health and Adults Social Care said:
“We all have a right to live a life free from abuse and neglect. We are working hard to protect adults at risk from abuse or neglect by enabling them to take steps to prevent, or stop it from happening.
“Sadly, the most common form of abuse in Newham takes place in a person’s own home by someone they know. We want all adults in our borough to feel safe at home, so I would advise people to join our drop-in sessions and get some great expert advice on how they can protect themselves and others.
“It’s important that residents wanting to raise any concerns or report abuse call our 24-hour Safeguarding helpline on 0203 373 0440.”
