Newham students record excellent GCSE results despite the challenges of the pandemic

After a difficult year of interrupted schooling, students across Newham recorded excellent GCSE results.

After a difficult year of interrupted schooling, students across Newham recorded excellent GCSE results.

This summer’s exams were replaced with teacher assessments as directed by the Department for Education. Students were not able to access the same level of in-classroom teaching throughout the year due to Covid -19 restrictions, resulting in a significant amount of teaching and learning taking place remotely.

Despite the challenges and obstacles faced by students and school staff, of all of the results received by 2pm on 12th August, Newham schools recorded excellent results this year:

  • 79% of students have achieved a level 4 or better in both English and mathematics, up from 73% in 2020 and 67% in 2019. In England In 2020, 71% of pupils achieved this standard
  • 58% had achieved a level 5 or better in both English and mathematics, up from 54% in 2020 and 47% in 2019. In England in 2020, 50% of pupils achieved this standard

Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz joined Councillor Sarah Ruiz, Cabinet Member for Education and Children Social Care and Councillor Jane Lofthouse, Deputy Cabinet Member for Education to meet students receiving their results at Little Ilford School in Manor Park.

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz said: “Despite the challenges, our young people have shown incredible resilience to achieve outstanding GCSE results across our schools. I’m so proud of all of them and of our school staff who have supported them. Nothing is more important than the future of our young people and the council is doing all it can to support them in this, the Year of the Young Person.  I wish students every success in their next endeavours.”

Councillor Sarah Ruiz, Cabinet Member  for Education and Children Social Care said: “Seeing young people receiving their excellent results today is a real joy. Pupils this year have overcome significant obstacles to achieve these results.  Our warmest congratulations to all pupils and school staff.”
