Newham students are celebrating today after record numbers achieved higher than the national average in their BTEC and A Level results.
Students due to sit public exams in summer 2021 missed out on a significant proportion of face-to-face teaching due to Covid-19. As a result, exams were replaced with teacher assessment.
However, despite this adversity, provisional results released (10 August) show that students in Newham have achieved outstanding results.
Some of the highlights from Newham’s schools and colleges that have reported their results include:
- London Academy of Excellence: 81 per cent of grades were A* or A (up from 73% in 2020) – 37 percentage points above the England average for all schools
- Chobham Academy: 44 per cent of grades were A* or A (up from 27 per cent in 2020) and 69 per cent were A* to B grades (in line with the England average for all schools)
- NewVIc College: 41 per cent of grades were A* to B (up from 32 per cent in 2020)
- NewVIc College: 558 students BTEC extended diplomas, of which 20 per cent resulted in the highest possible outcome of triple distinctions. The overall pass rate was 95 per cent.
- St Bonaventure’s School: 34 per cent of all grades were A* or A (24 per cent in 2020) and 63 per cent were A* to B (57 per cent in 2020)
- St Angela’s Ursuline: 25 per cent of grades were A* or A (16 per cent in 2020) and 55 per cent were A* to B (50 per cent in 2020).
To celebrate this important achievement, the Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz joined Councillor Sarah Ruiz, Cabinet Member for Education and Children Social Care and Councillor Jane Lofthouse, Deputy Cabinet Member for Education to meet students receiving their results at NewVIc College.
Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz said: “I am so proud of the young people of Newham and everything they have achieved, particularly as they have experienced such adversity and disruption over the past year and I would like thank our parents, carers and teachers for their dedication and commitment in supporting our young people. Nothing is more important than the future of our young peoples and that is why as Mayor I have initiated record investment in the Brighter Futures program and made the centrepiece of our Towards a Better Newham plan the good well-paying jobs that our talented young people deserve.”
Councillor Sarah Ruiz said: “It was great to meet so many talented students at NewVIc and to hear about their plans now they have their results. This particular cohort of students have already faced so many challenges and worked incredibly hard so I know they will go on to achieve even more in the future. They should all be very proud.”
