Newham Council statement on the death of a cyclist on Romford Road

“It is with deep regret that the Council has learnt of the death of a cyclist on Romford Road following a collision with a car in the early hours of Friday morning. Police have named the man as Jay Kristiansen, who was 31, and from Romford.

“This is a tragic incident, and all our thoughts and condolences go out to Mr Kristiansen’s family at this terrible time.

“The driver of the car believed to be involved did not stop at the scene and officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit launched an investigation.

“On Saturday, 25 July a man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of a collision and causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released on bail to return on a date in late August.

“Officers continue to appeal for witnesses and information. Anyone who saw the collision or has relevant dash cam footage is asked to call Chadwell Heath Traffic Garage on 020 8597 4874, quoting ref 961/24Jul.

“The council will of course, for its part, be co-operating with the police in any way we can.

“We await details of the investigation into the incident, the results of which will be fed into our safety and road planning.”
