Chelmsford man pays price for assault on Newham Council officer

A man from Chelmsford in Essex has been hit with a 100-hour community service order after admitting to the racial assault of a Newham Council enforcement officer.

Matt McGory, 27, appeared at Thames Magistrates Court on 19 February after Newham officers who attended a site in Rathbone Street, E16 in October, were subjected to threats and a racially aggravated assault by the defendant. The incident was captured on the officers’ body camera equipment which was used in evidence at the hearing.

The court ordered that McGory must complete 100 hours of unpaid work within 12 months, and also pay the officer £100 in compensation.

Cllr James Beckles, cabinet member for community safety said; “We welcome the seriousness with which the courts have dealt with this case, it is a reminder that Newham Council will always pursue those who attack or abuse our staff to the full extent of the law.”
