The Mayor of Newham has welcomed the announcement that 12 institutes of technology have been announced as part of a £170million Government funded plan.
The joint bid by Queen Mary University London (QMUL) and Newham College to establish the London Institute of Transport Technology based in Newham’s Albert Island, in the Royal Docks, was one of those approved. Albert Islands is one of three Strategic Sites within the Enterprise zone in Newham’s Royal Docks.
The Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz, said: “The London Institute of Transport Technology is great news for Newham, our Enterprise Zone in the Royal Docks, and the young people of this borough in particular.
“As co-chair of the Royal Docks Enterprise Zone Programme Board, I am delighted to see part of one of the strategic sites within the Enterprise Zone earmarked for this development. The institute will be vital in supporting our local economy to thrive where local residents can access training and develop skills making them fully prepared to take advantage of this evolving digital and technological age. I see this latest achievement as a major step forward in developing a Newham talent pipeline that not only specifically prioritises local people in developing new skills, it will help raise aspirations of our young people to be at the forefront of meeting the world’s demand. Needless to say that I am thrilled, we are making great strides to realise my vision of an inclusive Community Wealth Building agenda and my determination to ensure all investment in the borough really benefits our residents and all our neighbourhoods. Newham is going places and together we are beginning to shape a legacy for generations to come.”
Stephen Brayshaw, Newham Council skills commissioner, said: “I welcome the news that Newham will be home to one of the ambitious new flagship institutes.
“The London Institute of Transport Technology will give our residents the chance to achieve high levels of vocational skills and get well paid jobs which help them realise their ambitions.”
