Balaam Leisure Centre remains closed following the discovery of a water leak through the concrete pool tank which also forms the ceiling of the basement gym.
Latest update - 25 July 2019
The structure has now undergone specialist testing and the results have been received and evaluated.
The Centre will remain closed while the Council develops a range of options for decision makers to consider with regard to the future of the centre.
The options may include the potential for alternative leisure provision.
We will consult with local residents and centre users on those options ahead of a meeting of the Cabinet in the autumn.
We apologise for the length of time it’s taken to bring you this update, but unfortunately the testing and reporting process took longer than expected.
Users of the Balaam Leisure Centre are reminded they can use facilities at Atherton, East Ham and Newham Leisure Centres at no extra cost.
Steps have been taken to protect the site from unauthorised access but this is solely for security purposes.
No decision about the future of the Centre has been taken.

Balaam Leisure Centre remains closed following the discovery of a serious water leak into the concrete slab which forms the roof of the gym. The structure has undergone specialist testing and the results are currently being evaluated. In the meantime members of Balaam can use facilities at Atherton, East Ham and Newham Leisure Centres at no extra cost.
Steps have been taken to protect the site from unauthorised access (site hoardings etc) but this is solely for security purposes. No decision about the future of the Centre has been taken.
Newham Council hopes to be able to give an update on options for the centre going forward soon.
