• 1,400 extra opening hours offered a warm safe space for residents over the winter
Sunday 30 March will see the last day of opening for Newham’s ten Warm Havens, based in our family of libraries across the borough.
The Warm Havens have been operating since 4 November with extended hours until 8pm on weekdays and Saturdays – with an extra day on Sunday from 12 noon – 4pm.
During this time, there have been:
- 15,000 additional visits to libraries during the extended opening hours
- 60 additional events including energy efficiency support, board games, health & fitness
- About 150,000 free warm drinks handed out
Councillor Neil Wilson, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said: “We know from the feedback from our residents that the Warm Havens have provided a real sanctuary of warmth, friendship and support during the long winter months.
“It is a great example of the Council and its staff going above and beyond the call of duty to assist some of the most vulnerable in our society from young to old. The ‘warm’ in Warm Havens, doesn’t just come from the heating – it’s the warmth of the welcome our staff extend – and for that I thank them.”
The extra hours, free teas and coffees have been appreciated by residents who’ve recorded their thoughts on the service.
Desiree Briscombe, Library Supervisor at East Ham, said: “Some residents said they came to the library for the warmth and the unlimited hot drinks available at no cost. They also appreciated being able to use other services such as free Wi-Fi and phone charging. Others commented that they hadn’t had a hot drink since the previous day due to a lack of money, and they found the service extremely helpful.”
On message boards some residents left their own messages, like this Stratford resident: “Many thanks for this services – a warm drink on a chilly day – keep up the good work!”
And this from Manor Park library: “‘Back in the day, we weren’t allowed food or drinks in the library, but here we are where the library itself are providing the hot drinks! I think it is great for people who are struggling at home and can come here to stay warm, meet new people and enjoy the hot drinks. I am also enjoying it myself.”
Another added: “The Warm Haven initiative is wonderful! It makes the library feel even more like a second home. I’ve met new people over a cup of tea, and it’s helped me feel less isolated during the winter months.”
