On Saturday night in Canning Town, a terrifying incident unfolded when a 17-year old was the victim of a serious knife assault.
Though he remains in a critical condition, I am thankful that he is being supported by our valued NHS.
However, through the weekend my prayers and thoughts have been with him and his family who will be going through unimaginable pain that their loved one has been viciously hurt.
It is another stark reminder of the dangers of knives and why we remain resolute in our focus on eradicating all weapons from our streets because the safety of our young people and all residents in Newham is paramount. Anyone who thinks carrying knives and perpetrating acts of violence is normal, acceptable or ‘ok’; be clear it is not.
Along with my cabinet members for Community Safety and Children Services, I am being kept updated as the police investigation continues and I am pleased that arrests have been made. I am working with local ward councillors to reassure local residents, including businesses who have been impacted by the horrific incident that took place on Saturday night.
Working with the local police, officers from the Council are ensuring that there will be enhanced police presence in the area over the coming days. If you have any information, I would urge you to call the Met Police via 101 quoting CAD 6234/01Mar.
