A Statement from the Mayor of Newham

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE responds to Government announcement that Newham Council is one of 30 councils granted Exceptional Financial Support

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE has welcomed the news that Newham Council’s application for Exceptional Financial Support has been approved by Government, saying:

“This decision reflects a recognition of the immense financial pressures facing Newham—particularly the unsustainable costs of temporary accommodation.  I welcome the collaborative approach taken by this government in supporting councils facing financial difficulty, as a result of a legacy of cuts and austerity.”

“This decision means that when Full Council that meets on 27th February it will be able to set a balanced budget for 2025/26, as we are legally required to do.”

The Mayor continued:

“We are a financially responsible council, with historically low council tax, facing unprecedented financial challenges. We have robust financial planning and management systems in place, and have identified £57 million of savings as part of our budget process this year, and our Transformation Plan – changing the way council operates and delivers services - will deliver £23 million of efficiencies.”

“Despite the challenges, we are committed supporting residents, protecting the most vulnerable, and Building a Fairer Newham.”

“Newham will continue working with government, the Local Government Association and London Councils for a fairer, long-term funding settlement that ensures local authorities can plan sustainably for the future.”
