- Resurfacing project will cover a 340m stretch, improving both the safety and appearance.
- Planned for the latter part of this financial year, works will improve the road surface and strength.
Newham Council is set to receive £213,000 in grant funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) for the 2024-25 financial year, in addition to the £213,000 the Council received in the 2023-24. The funding for the previous year was used to complete carriageway resurfacing works on High Street South, East Ham.
This additional funding will allow the Council to carry out resurfacing works on a 340m stretch of High Street North, East Ham, between the junctions of Ron Leighton Way and Plashet Grove. This section, which forms the heart of East Ham Town Centre, is home to East Ham tube station and serves eight bus routes. The improvements to the carriageway surface will enhance both the appearance and function of this busy and prominent part of East Ham, a key hub for the borough.
Councillor Sarah Ruiz, Statutory Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Environment, Sustainable Transport, Children’s Services, and Education: “We are delighted to receive this additional £213,000 from the Department for Transport, which will enable us to carry out essential resurfacing works on High Street North, East Ham. This key stretch of road, which serves East Ham’s town centre and vital transport links, will benefit from a smoother, stronger surface that enhances both safety and the overall look of the area. Our commitment to improving Newham’s infrastructure continues, and we’re proud to make East Ham’s roads safer and more accessible for residents, visitors and businesses alike.”
Planned for the latter part of this financial year, the resurfacing works will not only improve the road surface but will also strengthen the road structure in high-stress areas, including junctions and bus stops.
Newham Council remains committed to improving the borough’s infrastructure and ensuring that essential transport links are safe and efficient for all residents and visitors.
