• Dog control orders tightened
• Street drinking measures renewed across the borough
Newham Council Cabinet (4 February) will be asked to renew its Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO) to keep the borough’s streets safe and clean.
The PSPOs enable Police and Newham Council Officers to crack down on irresponsible or dangerous street drinking and dog handling, to keep residents safe and create a pleasant environment.
Councillor Amar Virdee, Cabinet Member for Housing Needs, Homelessness, Private Rented Sector and Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Crime said: “Alcohol and dog related nuisance is intimidating and can cause harassment and unpleasant litter.
“Most people enjoy our open spaces responsibly, but a minority can make our streets and parks an unpleasant place to visit, and we are determined continue to take enforcement action to put a stop to it.”
The borough-wide PSPOs allow Police Officers and Council Officers to request the surrender of alcohol from nuisance drinkers, and force irresponsible dog owners to keep their animals on a lead and clean-up after them.
The dog PSPO will limit the number of dogs permitted on a lead for a single walker to 4, and all dogs must be kept on a lead on a public highway.
Cllr Virdee said: “We have asked our residents about the proposals and taken on-board their valuable feedback on how these Orders can be most effective.
“The renewal of the borough-wide PSPOs for alcohol and dog control will assist the Council and partners to continue to tackle the priority of reducing anti-social behaviour”.
Failure to comply with the PSPO conditions can result in £100 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) being issued – with the potential for further prosecution in the event of persistent non-compliance.
