• Over 300 elders, carers and volunteers enjoy fun and festivities at our annual Christmas lunches
Over 300 residents and carers revelled in the festive spirit at Stratford Town Hall this week – tucking into a full Christmas dinner and all the trimmings!
The elders, who are over 75 and live alone on modest incomes, enjoyed a free meal, music and fun at two events hosted by Newham Council. Entertainment came from Avenue Primary and Salisbury Primary School choirs, the Kurt Mayling Quartet and MC Tom Fowler. Each left with a goody bag containing essentials, snacks and gifts.
Statutory Deputy Mayor Cllr Ruiz said: “This event has been a firm festive favourite with our more elderly and isolated residents, and despite the squeeze on our budget this year, we have worked with our partners Aspers, Tate & Lyle, UCL and Axis Europe, to make sure the festivities went ahead. We are grateful to all who contributed, volunteered and made some magical memories for our residents who thoroughly enjoyed their days out!”
The three-course meals, which included turkey, vegan, vegetarian, and halal options, were delivered by the council-owned firm Juniper Catering. Of course, there was Christmas pudding, custard and mince pies!
The event was supported by volunteers from our sponsors - Aspers, Tate & Lyle, UCL and Axis Europe -the Council, and Newham College. Senior cabinet members, including Councillor Charlene McLean, Councillor Neil Wilson, Councillor Ann Easter and Councillor Sarah Ruiz, attended.
