• Over £600,000 delivered in Pension Credit to Newham pensioners
• Collaborative outreach effort brings lasting financial relief
Newham Council is proud to announce the success of a recent campaign that has helped 155 pensioners receive an additional £4,000 per year in unclaimed Pension Credit payments.
The campaign, carried out by the council’s financial wellbeing service, Our Newham Money, in partnership with Policy in Practice, Age UK London and the Greater London Authority, saw over 1,000 letters sent to residents believed to be eligible for Pension Credit but who had not yet claimed it. This proactive outreach has not only brought significant financial relief to pensioners now but is set to have a substantial long-term impact. The estimated lifetime value of the additional Pension Credit support brought into Newham through this campaign is projected at over £6 million.
The Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz, OBE said: “Pension Credit is a huge lifeline for our older residents on low incomes, yet too many miss out on this essential support. By working closely with local partners, we’ve been able to reach pensioners who may not have otherwise claimed what they’re entitled to. This campaign has delivered vital financial relief to hundreds of residents, providing security not just for this winter but for the years ahead. It means Newham pensioners can now access the Winter Fuel Allowance and other essential benefits– support that no one should go without.”
In recognition of the campaign’s success, The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced an extension for a further year, following new figures showing that the initiative has delivered an additional £9.5 million to over 2,000 Londoners over the past year alone.
Newham remains committed to improving the financial security of pensioners by continuing to collaborate with local partners to ensure no one misses out on the support they deserve.
