• Over a thousand residents attended jobs fair held at Stratford Town Hall
On Thursday 10 October, the council's employment service, Our Newham Work, hosted a jobs fair, providing an opportunity for local residents to connect with potential employers and explore various job openings.
The event, held on both World Mental Health Day and World Homeless Day, also provided attendees with opportunities to access resources dedicated to mental health and homelessness support.
The Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, praised the event’s success and the positive impact it had on the community. “We’re proud to have hosted an event that not only supported employment but also offered vital services for mental health and homelessness. This jobs fair is a testament to our commitment to not just foster job opportunities, but also to provide crucial services that support mental health and combat homelessness. Together, we are paving the way for stable, sustainable futures for all our residents.
“This event also exemplifies our commitment to building a fairer Newham. We are dedicated to supporting our residents during these challenging times. Together, we are creating pathways to sustainable employment and empowering residents to thrive. Thank you to all the businesses and organisations that participated, and to everyone who attended– we are proud to stand with you in building a brighter future for Newham."
Councillor Amar Virdee highlighted the collaborative spirit that made the jobs fair a success, saying, “the turnout was fantastic. It’s inspiring to see so many partners come together to support our residents. This event was designed to be accessible for everyone. I wholeheartedly encourage even more residents and partners to join us for future events.”
Feedback from residents was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the chance to connect directly with employers and access essential resources. Several attendees reported securing jobs on the spot, further illustrating the event's success.
