October half-term activities to help Newham families keep fit and healthy

October half term leisure activities

• Range of free and paid-for sessions available, in partnership with GLL
• Indoor and outdoor sessions available

Newham Council’s three leisure centres - operated in partnership with charitable social enterprise GLL under the 'Better' brand - are gearing up to welcome children and families with a range of free and paid-for activities during the school half-term holidays.

Families are assured of a warm welcome, escaping the autumn chills with Inflatable Swim sessions at East Ham Leisure Centre (prices £12.50 for two adults and two children) and Aqua Splash sessions (8yrs and over) on the pool inflatable at Newham and Atherton Leisure Centres (prices £19.00 for two adults and two children). Under-16s are free to swim across the borough, providing they have a Newham Resident Card.

Councillor Neil Wilson, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care and Councillor Sarah Ruiz, Cabinet Lead for Children and Young People Services said:

“Families across Newham can enjoy a range of half-term activities both at our leisure centres and within the community. All offers support our efforts to help residents live healthy, happy, and fulfilled lives.

“The jam-packed half-term schedule is evidence of our effective partnership with GLL, building on progress to boost physical activity levels, while also tackling obesity rates within our children.

“I would encourage parents and carers to try out something different with their children, while also enjoying sports they are familiar with. There are plenty of options available.”

There are also Intensive Swim Lesson courses (prices £30 for children and £40.50 for adults) available and Better has extended its Junior Gym sessions (prices £3.55 peak and £2.55 off peak) and Fitness Classes (prices £6.35 peak and £5.25 off peak for adults) too during the school break - to promote healthy habits.

Atherton Leisure Centre's Soft Play (under 10s, £5 per child) is open every day; 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 4pm at Weekends.

Better's Newham Partnership Manager Paul Whiteman said:

"Whatever residents need to keep active this half term and banish boredom - we've got them covered.

"Whether they want a splash in a pool or a fitness session in a gym - we have a variety of affordable and accessible activities for everyone.  See www.better.org.uk for details."

Swim Sessions can be booked at: www.better.org.uk/what-we-offer/lesson-and-courses/swimming, on the better_uk app or in centre.

In addition to paid sessions, residents can also take advantage of free multi-sport activities in parks and in centres via the Active Communities Programme. It promises free fun for friends and family between 28 October to 1 November. Choose from football, cricket, basketball and more in Plashet Park, East Ham Leisure Centre and Newham Leisure Centre.
