Two recent incidents involving dogs attacking members of the public have led to an increase in community concern about dangerous dogs.

Fortunately, no-one was seriously injured in the attacks, although one person did require hospital treatment. Both the incidents are under investigation by the Met Police. Acting on intelligence from Newham Animal Welfare team, the Police have been able to seize three XL-Bully type dogs which were registered with the Council in relation to one of the incidents, and two people have been arrested.

Councillor Amar Virdee, Cabinet member for Community Safety and Crime, said: “Thanks to vital preparation work by the Animal Welfare Team ahead of the ban, the Council is confident the majority of XL-Bully dogs in the borough are properly registered, which means if incidents occur intelligence can be shared swiftly with the Police.

“The Animal Welfare Service has a dedicated and experienced team that works to promote and encourage responsible dog ownership through enforcement and education.

“As a result of the preventative and enforcement action taken by the Animal Welfare team prior to the introduction of the new controls on XL bullies, there have been very limited incidents involving such dogs within Newham.”

Newham boasts one of the most comprehensive data bases of XL-Bully’s and there are currently 205 Newham-homed dogs registered with DEFRA. This list enabled Newham to contact all known owners of XL-Bully’s to make them aware that failure to register was against the law that could lead to their dogs being seized and put to sleep. It also helps the Team to quickly and efficiently deal with complaints from the public or our partners in the Police, if incidents happen.

In addition to the duties required by law, Newham’s Animal Welfare Team take a proactive approach to their work. This includes monitoring and intelligence gathering on illegal breeding and sales within the borough and enforcing against those who seek to break the law, putting animals and residents at risk of harm.

Unlike many local authorities, Newham Welfare Team will accept calls from the public and the police about stray or nuisance dogs, who are suspected of being “banned breeds”.

If you have concerns regarding the behaviour of any dog or are worried they maybe an unregistered dangerous breed and would like advice, please contact the Animal Welfare Service on: 0208 586 9739.
