Beckton District Park North will be temporarily closed from 21 October for essential restoration and repair, marking the first step towards creating a better, cleaner, greener and more biodiverse space. The closure will last one week, with the park reopening on 26 October.
The lake within the park will undergo a series of important restoration works aimed at improving the natural habitat for local plants and wildlife. These works are part of the larger Beckton Parks Masterplan, a community-led initiative designed to improve the whole of Beckton Parks - one of the most ambitious urban green space projects in London.
Councillor Sarah Ruiz, Statutory Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Environment, Sustainable Transport, Children Services and Education, said: "These essential restoration works are part of our long-term vision for Beckton Parks as outlined in the Beckton Parks Masterplan. We are committed to creating spaces that support biodiversity and offer residents cleaner, greener parks. While this five-day closure may cause some inconvenience, the result will be a park that’s better for native wildlife and more enjoyable for all residents and visitors."
Key Improvements Include:
- Lake restoration: Over the course of five days, the lake will be closed as essential works are carried out. Trees will be pruned and coppiced and large areas of shrubs will be cleared, reed islands established, and wildflower areas created to foster a richer biodiversity.
- Temporary fencing: A temporary fence will be installed around the lake to help the ecosystem recover and limit the large population of geese, allowing smaller waterfowl and other species to thrive. This fence will remain in place for a minimum of 18 months.
- Removal of quantities of fish: The Beckton Parks Masterplan concludes that the lake cannot support an ongoing fishing due to the impact on the wider ecology of the lake. Quantities of fish will be safely removed and re-homed.
