Newham Launches Islamophobia Awareness Month ‘Seeds of Change’ Programme

Islamophobia Awareness Month 2024

• Newham announces the launch of Islamophobia Awareness Month with the theme "Seeds of Change" to combat prejudice and raise awareness.

• The month-long programme includes exhibitions, workshops, and a culminating SHAAM Nasheed concert, all aimed at fostering understanding and unity within the community.

We are proud to announce the launch of our Islamophobia Awareness Month programme for November, based on the theme “Seeds of Change”. With the current growing rise in islamophobia, Newham's Seeds of Change programme seeks to raise awareness, foster understanding, and combat prejudice through a series of thought-provoking events and activities.

Councillor Rohit K. Dasgupta, Deputy Cabinet Member for Equalities, Social Justice and Culture said, “In light of recent national and global events, it’s more important than ever to stand united against prejudice and discrimination. This year’s theme reminds us that the seeds we plant today – through our actions, words, and attitudes – will shape the future we all share.

“Let’s embrace this opportunity to learn about and appreciate each other’s differences, which will build respect for the diversity we cherish right here in Newham. Let’s continue to nurture unity and understanding and build a community where everyone is valued and respected.

“Let us use this month to reflect on our shared humanity and commit to sowing seeds of kindness, tolerance, and unity.”

The month-long programme kicks off on Friday, 1 November, with a captivating conversation featuring YA author Ayaan Mohamud at Stratford’s Old Town Hall. This event, facilitated by Hudda Khaireh, will set the stage for an engaging exploration of the programme's theme.

Throughout November, visitors can immerse themselves in a range of exhibitions, Newham’s Faith Buildings & Stories by Shahed Saleem, and Seeds of Change: Celebrating Islam installation by artist Sahra Hersi from 25 to 30 November at Applecart Arts. This unique installation will offer a serene space for joy and reflection, inviting visitors to contemplate themes of faith, community, and connection.

Other key events include Muslim Women and Islamophobia: Creative Writing workshops led by local author Farzana Hakim, which will run every Friday throughout November and Reflections on Prophetic Wisdoms through Creativity, a gathering that combines dialogue and artistic expression.

The programme will culminate in a SHAAM Nasheed concert on Saturday, 30 November, offering a powerful celebration of traditional Islamic music. The SHAAM Nasheed group, formed in late 1997, aims to present and reinterpret traditional Islamic songs known as nasheeds—a genre that dates back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

All events are free for Newham residents, but booking is required.
