• Newham’s Black History Month programme is set to launch on 4 October with an extraordinary lineup.
• A variety of captivating and enlightening free talks, workshops, markets, and musical performances will be featured throughout the month to celebrate the rich and diverse tapestry of Black heritages.
Newham proudly presents its official programme of activities for Black History Month, commencing on Friday 4 October. The theme for this year, 'Reclaiming Narratives,' signifies a dedication to addressing historical inaccuracies and seizing control of narratives by highlighting stories, allegories, and histories.
Black History Month is an annual celebration that honours the invaluable contributions of the Black African and Caribbean communities locally, nationally and internationally.
Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE said, "This inspiring programme honours the history and culture of Newham's diverse communities. Our dedication to hosting a dynamic array of events and activities emphasises the significance of highlighting the resilience and diversity of our community.
“Black History Month provides a crucial opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate the immense contributions of Black African and Caribbean communities to our borough and beyond. This celebration is not only a reflection on the past, but also a source of empowerment for our present and future."
Councillor Rohit K. Dasgupta, Deputy Cabinet Member for Equalities, Social Justice and Culture said, "By highlighting Black individuals' rich histories, cultures, and achievements, we foster a sense of pride and belonging within the community. Moreover, these events provide an opportunity to educate and engage all residents, promoting understanding and unity. Through this month-long celebration, we aim to challenge ignorance, prejudice, and racial hatred, and to build a more inclusive and harmonious society.”
Kicking off the celebrations on Friday 4 October is an engaging conversation between esteemed authors and journalists Aamna Mohdin and Kimberly McIntosh, focusing on Mohdin's new book, "Scattered: The Making and Unmaking of a Refugee,".
Other key highlights of include the Black Pound Markets, offering a vibrant celebration of Newham's Black businesses and entrepreneurs. The markets will take place on Saturday 12 October, 9am to 3pm at Woodgrange Market, and on Saturday 19 October, from 12pm to 4pm at Rathbone Market. These unique events will also feature music and entertainment for the whole family.
In addition, there will be "The Power of Words - Remembering Benjamin Zephaniah," an event dedicated to commemorating the renowned poet's body of work. Through spoken word, music, dance, and art, this evocative tribute aims to captivate and inspire audiences while honouring his influential contributions to literature and the arts.
The finale event will be held on Saturday 26 October, and this will be an electric night of grime music, showcasing new young talent on the scene. Produced by Ruff Sqwad Arts Foundation, this event guarantees an unforgettable evening of musical excellence.
