• Government statistics reveal Newham is currently fourth in England for reading, writing and maths
• Provisional results are taken from Year 6 pupils taking SATs in May

National statistics released this week show that for reading, writing and maths, Newham Year 6 pupils are currently ranked fourth in England, from 153 local authorities, with 72 per cent achieving the expected standard or better.

The Department of Education statistics cover attainment in assessments taken by pupils at the end of Year 6 when most are age 11, usually referred to as SATs. On average nationally 61 per cent of young people are meeting the expected standards in reading, writing and maths.

Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, said: “Our primary schools play a significant role in our plans to make Newham the best place in the world to grow up and these results demonstrate why. Despite many facing significant challenges, our young people are achieving higher standards across these core skills than those in much more privileged areas. I am incredibly proud of these results and they are a testament to our hard working young people, schools and their incredible teachers.”

“It is also important to note that these pupils experienced disruption to their learning during the pandemic, particularly at the end of Year 2 and in Year 3 so this makes these results even more impressive. I am sure this hard work and resilience will mean they continue to soar in the future as they start their journey at secondary school.”

Councillor Sarah Ruiz, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Environment, Sustainable Transport, Children Services and Education, said: "These outstanding results reflect the dedication and hard work of our pupils, teachers and schools. To be ranked fourth nationally is an incredible achievement, especially considering the challenges many of our young people have faced. The fact that 72 percent of our Year 6 students are meeting or exceeding the expected standards in reading, writing and maths is a testament to their resilience and commitment. I am immensely proud of their success, and I know that this will provide them with a strong foundation as they move forward into secondary education."
