• Newham celebrated South Asian Heritage Month from 18 July to 17 August with a vibrant and diverse programme under the theme 'Free to be Me.’
• Two Pioneer Awards were presented to DJ Ritu MBE and Mr Surrinder Parwana to honour their remarkable contributions to British Asian music and culture.
Building on the success of previous years, this month-long celebration aimed to raise awareness and honour the rich British South Asian heritage in Newham. From captivating art exhibitions to pulsating musical performances, the lineup of events catered to all ages and a wide range of interests, promising a sensory feast for all attendees. The engaging activities provided an immersive cultural experience that left a lasting impact.
The celebration was about entertainment and education, offering residents a unique opportunity to dive into the rich tapestry of British South Asian heritage and actively participate in the festivities
The programme showcased various talents, from local artist Naga Dharmasha Vardhini, a 17-year-old Bharatanatyam dancer, to internationally renowned artists like Rohan Roy, whose work has graced over 50 Bollywood movies.
South Asian Heritage Month began with 'Chai Chronicles: Exploring the History of South Asian Tea’ which set the stage for captivating events. The festivities culminated in a dazzling throwback to the legendary 80s South Asian rave scene with Desi Daydreams. The epic finale event headlined by Shin DCS and DJ MD filled Stratford Town Hall with infectious Bhangra beats, vibrant colours, and unforgettable energy. The event transported attendees back to the golden era of underground daytime raves that captivated the hearts of a generation.
Two prestigious Pioneer Awards were also presented at the finale event to recognise the outstanding contributions of Shin DCS - Mr. Surrinder Parwana and DJ Ritu MBE to British Asian music and culture.
Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE said, “The month-long extravaganza drew many attendees, boosting our local creative economy and fostering a sense of community. Desi Daydreams, our grand finale event, was more than just a party; it celebrated South Asian culture, music, and community. It was a chance to connect with like-minded people and create lasting memories.
