Initial Statement by Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE

London City Airport

Mayor Fiaz welcomes victory on weekend flight curfews but remains concerned about increase flights following Government’s decision on London City Airport.

Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, said: “I’m delighted that our case that flights during the existing weekend curfew period would create a material noise impact leading to significant harm has been accepted in today’s decision by the government. Despite allowing London City Airport’s overall appeal to increase annual passenger numbers from 6.5 million to near 9 million, the government has accepted that the curfew for 24 hours from 12.30pm on Saturday till Sunday which has been in place for 38-years should remain. This is great news for our residents.

“However, I remain deeply concerned that our residents will be seriously harmed by the impact of further air-flight noise with today’s decision to allow an increase in flights in the early mornings throughout the rest of the week. We will be studying the decision notice carefully and considering all options as we remain concerned about the detrimental impacts on the health and quality of life of our residents.”
