The owners of an unlicensed grocery store in Stratford are regretting their decision to sell illegal alcohol after Newham Council Licensing officers paid a visit.

The officers had been alerted to an increase in street drinking in the Maryland area, with residents reporting anti-social behaviour linked to alcohol.

Following further investigation, including test purchases, Newham’s Licensing Enforcement Team visited Bistro in Leytonstone Road, Stratford, E15 and discovered a large quantity of alcohol in fridges and hidden amongst grocery items and in storage areas.

The owners do not hold a license to sell alcohol.

The drinks recovered included beers, spirits and home brew in unlabelled plastic bottles.

In all the Licensing Team seized around 170 litres of illicit alcohol – which has been destroyed.

The shop owners were called in for interview by the team to explain the action taken, while reminding them of the law around the sale of alcohol. They were also warned the premises will continue to be monitored and any further breaches will lead to further action and possible prosecution.

Ed King, Licensing Team Leader said; “This is a good result for us and the residents of Maryland. Their reports of troublesome street drinking have led to this investigation and ultimately to the closing down of this illegal operation.

“It’s a great example of intelligence from residents being used by the Council to tackle illegal and nuisance behaviour on our streets.”
