Newham celebrated its first ever “World Car-Free Day” this month, with four roads closed to traffic to allow children to play in their own street.
Councillor Rachel Tripp, cabinet member for the environment and highways went along to join the fun at Cecil Road in Plaistow.
Play – streets were also created in Sidney Road and Tylney Road in Forest Gate, and Mafeking Road in Canning Town.
Cllr Tripp said: “I’m really proud that Newham has hosted its first ever “World Car-Free Day” in conjunction with the campaign group “London Play”.
“Creating play streets is a brilliant way for all of us to reclaim our outside spaces from the motor car. It gives children and grown ups the opportunity to get active, play together, make new friends and enjoy the environment they live in.
“Although the weather didn’t play ball, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and the great news is that Newham residents won’t have to wait until next year to create a car free event. The council has just given the green light for a scheme which makes it easier to create play-streets up to 24 times throughout the year.”
