- Newham’s first permanent upgraded modal filter is now complete
- The new design replaces temporary planter boxes with wider pavements, new trees and flowerbeds allowing pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency vehicles to pass through
- Councillor James Asser joined local children to plant the new gardens as part of the scheme
The Keogh Road modal filter is part of Newham Council’s Atherton low-traffic neighbourhood (LTN), which has involved extensive engagement with the local community to design the scheme; reducing through traffic; improving air quality; creating quieter and more pleasant streets; and making it easier to walk and cycle.
Councillor James Asser, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainable Transport, said: “We have been investing in Newham’s streets to improve the quality of our neighbourhoods, make our streets safer and help improve the local environment.
“Working with residents in locations where we have introduced closures using wooden planters, we are changing these to long-term better quality street designs.
“The first completed site is Keogh Road where three years ago a car crashed into the side of a house. The changes have made this road safer, it can no longer be used as a dangerous cut-through, the changes have improved the look of the street, and created a quiet street for the residents and the local nursery.
“This is the start and we will be delivering more of these improvements for the benefit of local residents and improve the quality of our local neighbourhoods.”
From March 2021, and running for 18 months, the Council ran an experimental LTN and carefully monitored its performance while gathering feedback from residents.
In September 2022 the Council decided to make the LTN permanent and is now introducing complementary measures, including this new modal filter design.
Following the decision to make the LTN permanent, plans were drawn to redesign the Keogh Road modal filter. Council officers worked with residents to finalise the designs and get the best quality for the local area.
