- Mayor Fiaz and her Cabinet approve £1m as part of joint investment to support the development of Stratford Station expansion plans to future-proof Newham.
- Cabinet decision follows Newham Council’s submission of the Strafford Station Outline Business Case to central government, in collaboration with Network Rail, Transport for London and London Legacy Development Corporation in August 2023.
Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE and Cabinet approved £1m match-funding today (Tuesday 3rd October) as part of a £4.25m joint investment to drive forward the next phase of plans to improve Stratford Station.
Following the submission by Newham Council and partners Network Rail, Transport for London and the London Legacy Development Corporation of the initial Strategic Outline Business Case to central government in August, the £4.25m joint investment will support the next phase of work for the significant transport infrastructure project for Newham and East London to progress the plans further.
Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, said: “Stratford Station is one of the country’s busiest transport hubs and is vital for our residents and commuters; as well as the inclusive growth in Newham and London. As we future proof Newham, we urgently need to address the current constraints of the station to prevent overcrowding and transform Stratford Station into a vibrant transport hub for commuters.
“The funding is an essential next step to make the station safer for residents and visitors and open more employment opportunities for residents as part of our exciting vision for the wider Stratford neighbourhood.“
“The £4.25 joint investment we will be injecting into the Stratford Station expansion scheme with our partners will allow us to develop a feasible programme that we can submit to government to secure the significant transport infrastructure funding we need.”
The £4.25m investment will develop a range of options to take the programme forward to the next phase prior to submission to the government. It follows the completion of the Stratford Station Outline Business case submitted to government in August 2023, which established the need for an upgrade to Stratford Station.
Alongside the £1m investment by Newham Council approved by Mayor Fiaz and her Cabinet, additional contributions of £1m each has been secured from Network Rail and Transport for London; with the London Legacy Development Corporation contributing £1.25m.
The total £4.25m will fund design and feasibility works, cost and development options and a public consultation ahead of the next Business Case submission to central government in 2025, with procurement commencing later in October 2023.
